		<description>Scent of the Future Flower
Imagine the scent of the future flower. As part of research on how flowers respond to climate change, we found that their scents might also shift in reaction to climate change. Together with Future Society, Monika Seyfried and I envisioned the scent of a future flower, shaping unique perfume concepts that make the climate of 2100 tangible through sensory experiences.


	Just as we try to center ourselves in the present moment by connecting with nature, could we feel grounded in the futures by experiencing the future nature? 
Imagine immersion into the scents and colours of the flowers that could surround us in the futures.Though one might think that a rose’s scent will be the same forever, in fact flowers’ scents can change drastically in relation to their climate. Increased ozone emissions disrupt the scent molecules, warmer temperatures or drier conditions put stress on flowers, which they express by altering their scent. This change of the scent is tied to defense, protection, as well as potentially attracting new pollinators.
	
To imagine the future flower scent, we looked into how many different flowers respond to the changing climate, how those changes impact their scents. Because of the entangled systems we both contain inside ourselves and inhabit, we also researched other angles of the question, such as evolutionary biology, bacterial intelligence.⁠

Below is some of the early research that eventually led to the design of scent concepts for Future Society. These scent concepts will be released as perfumes in 2027.

As part of the research, I prototyped a visualisation of scent molecules and how they react to climate, as show in the 4th slide above. It is built in d3.js and uses data from one of the scientific papers we read about flower scent shifts. In the visualisation, I show all of the molecules that make up the scent of the flower in different locations around the world, and then re-organise them based on frequency of each molecule type.&#38;nbsp;

		<description>Plant Futures


Plant Futures is an artistic research project seeking to understand how plants could shift in the face of future climate changes. Rather than focusing on stories of climate change on a macro level — wildfires, floods — I wanted to uncover the stories of climate change on a micro level that could eventually shape our familiar surroundings into something entirely new.
Looking at just one flower, what does it need to survive and how might those needs be impacted by future climates? How a flower blooms is rooted in the place in which it grows. The variance in size, petals, color, even veins can be traced to that month's temperature, rain, storms, which is in turn traced by sensors and compiled as data. 
Thus a flower represents, in and of itself, its surroundings as well as the broader climate.
I investigated how plants react to climate, imagining future flowers based on future climate data. Through researching how climate influences flowers’ color, shape, petals, veins, I speculated as to how future climate data might literally shape future flowers. Together with Marcin Ignac of Variable, we created one flower per year, from 2023 - 2100.

Clouds above, clouds below explores the entanglements between digital and physical clouds. It is the experimental outcome of 3 months’ research project into climate science and data, gathered on the website, cloudsabove.us. It contains a book and a visualisation to capture 1 chapter of the book. The book holds 8 topics uncovered in our research into climate and data visualisation. The visualisation expresses what we found when we went deeply into 1 topic: the connections between atmospheric and digital clouds.

The visualisation is built using d3.js and runs off of a custom dataset created to communicate the relationships between clouds, CO2, global warming, tipping points, and the implications that those elements have for our digital infrastructure. We used methods of futurescaping, systems thinking and data visualisation to capture and express the research we pursued.

Clouds above, clouds below visualises the connections between atmospheric clouds and digital clouds, through the vector of carbon dioxide. Clouds are the last and least known element in climate models of how hot our earth will get in the near future. They travel across space and time and touch every human and nonhuman life. Big or small, low or high, their shape and position change the temperature of the earth drastically, determining our present and future climates. In order to simulate and predict those future clouds, however, scientists need “the cloud”, as it describes our digital infrastructure. 

The digital cloud generates positive feedback loops all the way around back up to clouds again through "data warming". As clouds and their impacts on our current environment move, how will the digital infrastructures be impacted - from internet cables threatened by flooding to server farms heating? And how does our reliance on digital clouds potentially impact our ability to know what atmospheric clouds will do now and in the future?

How exactly does speculative design and futurescaping work? How does one design for the future or about the future? Together with Filippo Cuttica, we created a workshop to share futurescaping methods with a wider public, focusing especially on speculative design. While there are many strategies to engage in speculative design, in our approach, we divided the speculative design process up into 3 main phases. Within each phase, we shared the specific methods and tools that we find useful. 


As hands-on learning is always better than sitting back and listening, we identified climate migration as our anchoring topic and led our participants through the different phases of the speculative design process.

The first phase is about understanding change. After researching different trends and patterns, we find a focus within the many changes around the world - climate migration. To understand it more deeply, we search further for signals of this change. Here we can use the STEEP analysis (standing for Social, Technological, Economic, Environmental and Political) to flesh out the research as we seek to uncover a broader context for our future scenarios. 


In the case of climate migration, we identified and presented the main drivers for that trend - from water scarcity to extreme heat - as well as the numbers behind the trend. For example, by 2050, climate change could lead to more than 216 million people internally migrating in six regions of the world (source: WE forum). They will migrate from the coasts inland or from the South to the North. This is just one of many statistics and stories that we read as we immersed ourselves in the topic. 


We then shift to searching for signals of this change, seeking diverse signals from different cultures, different species. In our case, we collected stories of how animals, fish and plants are migrating due to climate change, and how that changes predatory-prey relations as well as life cycle food chains. We also look at seasteading (a technological signal), at impact on intangible cultural heritage (social), at urchinomics (an economic, environmental and social signal) - and many more. 


From this research intensive first phase, we move to the second phase: exploring possibilities. Here we use scenarios to bring that part of the future to life, future wheels to anticipate consequences and provocatypes to dive in and feel the possible future. Regardless of the tool, it’s best to start with a few scenarios that collect the focus and the signals so that we can imagine possible future outcomes from there.


In our case, we wrote 4 scenes that depict different corners of our future with climate migration. And then we distilled our scenarios from those longer scenes. Each scenario has time, a climate event, a location, a signal, an actor, an emotion and an issue. They are written to provoke ideas of the needs of that future, and the new services that might fill those needs. Take a look at our scenario “Prep Kit” and others:

Our participants divided into 4 groups, taking 1 scenario card per group. The next step was to flesh out the needs (outlined in the scenario “meta-data”), the new products or services that might be required to live in that future scenario. This step of envisioning tangible objects and services brings the future to our present desk and doorstep in no time. We came up with the initial ideas for the products (as time was short), but it was up to our participants to dive in and define them more fully.

Once the participants had continued to detail out the product or service that would be needed, they used a futures wheel to work through the possible impacts of that new product in that future scenario. Along the edges of the wheel, we placed prompts to structure their thinking. We asked them to consider the political, economic, social, technological and environmental impacts (PESTLE) to stimulate a wide range of impacts
For example, the group that worked with the product 1Choice wrote about a social impact where “Stoic philosophy and nihilism are more popular that football” among other ideas:&#38;nbsp;

Lastly, from the possible future impacts, participants developed one (or a few) into a possible future news headline, simulating that the future is already here, now. The headline is our light-weight version of a provocatype, which we make in order to manifest the future, to feel what it might be like if it really happened. The group that worked on the Prep kit scenario and 1Choice product made several headlines. This one stood out the most:

As we create these tangible manifestations of the future, we can discuss what is actually desirable, what outcomes we should aim at going forward? The provocatypes don’t necessarily show the shiniest utopic visions. Rather, they are often surprising, strange, yet revealing. From our futurescape (the scenario, the futures wheel, the provocatype), we can try to backcast and figure out how might either avoid the worrying impacts that we projected, or steer towards and nurture the hopeful futures we envisioned.

“We take scientific predictions and “weak signals” to extrapolate imaginative possibilities. These material extrapolations make visible the alternatives open to us; giving people a chance to discuss issues that affect us all.”

JUSTAI, a research group trying to “understand and transform the theory and practice of data and AI ethics”, wanted to both create a new network of people who work with AI ethics and visualise the diverse and unique members of the network as they joined. JUSTAI not only sought to build its own group of AI ethics researchers, but also understand the individuals who wanted to join through a lengthy thorough survey. We created a survey that ends with two immediate takeaways: 1) the “fingerprint”, a visualisation of the data the participant added and 2) “part of a whole”, visualising how their answers relate to the other answers given by all of the participants thus far. Lastly, we made a workshop experience where groups of people who identify as part of the field of AI ethics can come together and find new collaborators.
1. The fingerprint


Inspired by mycelial networks, we mapped the key answers that participants gave onto different paths of a dendrogram.&#38;nbsp;

How do we visualise the many dreams and perspectives people have about the futures? As part of an upcoming exhibition by the LAB at Rockwell Group, the Smithsonian and Institute for the Future, I designed a series of data visualisations to bring together the answers that visitors leave as they move through collections of 150 ideas, objects, and technological innovations.&#38;nbsp;
The questions ask visitors to give their input on hope and power with regards to topics that range from climate change to world peace. Visitors also leave their opinions about time travel, AI doctors and free education, among many more.&#38;nbsp;

However, when I joined the project, the exhibition had not yet launched (the above images are post launch). Thus I did not yet have the mass of visitor data we expected to collect over time. Yet through discussions with the question creators (IFTF) and surveys shared internally, I identified themes and possible patterns that might occur once the exhibition launched and the data was gathered. I came up with these themes and the concepts that would support them.

I handed over my prototype code of one of the data visualisations (Diverse Futures) and fullly fleshed out legends and sample datasets for the other visualisations. These were then implemented by the LAB once the exhibition was up and running, as shown below:

How might we bring the research out from the laboratory? The Synapse is an interactive digital installation that seeks to make cutting edge neuroscience research accessible to everyday visitors. I was part of the team at the Center for Spatial Research who designed the exhibit space of The Synapse for the Mind Brain Behavior Institute at Columbia University.

Most notably, the “Brain Index”, which is composed of a set of screens that move up to capture and then reveal the research happening in the larger brain above them. At key moments in the choreography, the tracking screens descend to the lobby visitors to engage with them through interactive research stories exploring cognition, sensory perception, decision making, learning and memory, addiction and reward, neural networks, and DNA sequencing.
The Synapse’s various parts - from the Brain Index to the thought-like chandelier at its center - are all data-driven. They are fed by the research the scientists are sharing through social media, research papers, and dedicated reports. 

I created proof of concept data visualisations, interaction and storytelling concepts to engage the general public, pulling their interest in to neuroscience through the intersections that can be made between neuroscience and art, media, psychology and more. Collaborating with journalists, architects, data scientists and of course, neuroscientists, together we created work that allows visitors to become familiar with the research that is happening in the building on a daily basis.Date: 2017 - 2018Details: Project website

We rely on energy for everything. From what we eat, to how we move, to how we communicate, energy (in different forms) is the basis for our lives. Yet much of that energy is fossil-fuel based, CO2 emitting and climate changing. How else could we fuel our lives? &#38;nbsp;

In this project, we worked with physicists, scientists, sociologists and economists to understand the future scenarios we face with regards to energy. How available will different kinds of energies be in the near and far future? How will the use of that energy impact our climate? How do the decisions that we make as individuals, as countries, as a world lead to different possible futures? 

Our work was to create an experience where everyday people can learn about individual and collective decisions will impact our future energy capacities and CO2 levels. Our client was EUROFusion, a consortium of national fusion research institutes, who sought to communicate not only the potential of nuclear fusion energy, but also how it would sit within a mix of energies depending on international cooperation levels with regards to investment in clean energy. 
We mapped out scenarios based on real data related to energy production, consumption and related carbon emissions from 2020 to the year 2100. Beneath our designer-style scenarios, we relied on three key scientific scenarios - Fragmentation, Paternalism and Harmony.

With the key scientific scenarios as well as enriched signals and trends that tie to key points in those scnearios, we created a tree of possible futures. Each node of the tree contains a scenario-as-story, that contextualises the research about that moment in the future. We chose to scope each scenario to a given context, changing from personal stories to infrastructure stories to landscape stories. We then mapped these into physical space, where participants could literally walk around the scenarios that populate the futures of 2030, 2050, and 2080.
We anchor the experience with a game-like mechanism: the visitors to the installation are on a mission to create a better reality than the world they left behind. They are guided by “GAIA”, who briefs them on each future timespan that they travel into, and after they finish exploring that future, they can make a choice. This choice will control the stories that are presented in the next time span.&#38;nbsp;
In this way, we transitioned from data in a 2D spreadsheet to experiences in a 3D space. Participants walk the circle or “loop” of 2050, listening to different stories of what is happening on the streets of a protest.

We call each loop a mission, and each mission holds different objects and stories. Mission 2 is set in Seoul, 2050, where we hear of the infrastructural services and products that are now possible. The participants see different objects, artefacts that have become part of daily life. One of the infrastructural services they might experience is Migrational Services, which is a new way to plan your travel without harming the migration of other species.&#38;nbsp;

Mission 3 is set in Northern Africa, 2080, and focuses on landscape-based changes including geopolitical events. These stories (again, generated from the decision the participants took at Mission 2) are presented as slices of land with video projection.&#38;nbsp;

We undertook the foundational research, conceptualisation, founding principles and working prototype. The project is part of a traveling exhibition highlighting the work of EUROfusion - a consortium of national fusion research institutes located in the European Union and Switzerland.

What is the future of heritage when there is no universal canon to distinguish what is worth remembering and preserving from what is not? This is the pressing question that guided our creation of Future Erasure, a futurescaping workshop we made at CIID Research (DK)
together with partners at the Media, Culture, Heritage at the University of Newcastle (UK). 
The workshop is built to engage museum leaders in the possible future scenario where

Based on research about current trends, indicators and technologies, we imagined a future where museums are so overwhelmed by the amount of items that should count as heritage; they can no longer keep their full collections and must delete 20% of it every year. To figure out what to delete and how this challenge would affect the museum experience of this future, we invited a group of heritage experts from different museums to form the “Deletion Bureau. The experts came from European museums, thus the activities focused around issues regarding European heritage and personalised the materials around the scenario and the problems their institutions face.
We used speculative
design and design fiction methods to create content and materials for this future,
such as newspapers, films and a series of physical and digital prototypes to immerse our participants in this future scenario.

The experience centered on three major tasks in order to stimulate debate and push our participants to articulate their values and visions for the futures of their institutions' heritage: creating an algorithm for deletion, prototyping devices for experiencing deleted objects, and envisioning systems for the public to interact with deleted heritage.&#38;nbsp;

One concept pictured above envisions a future museum where "every human's obliged to carry condensed info of 5 objects of their choice. With your device you can re-experience your objects or retrieve objects from other people. To enhance your objects, use the central museum enhancer and share object data with other visitors."The members of the Deletion Bureau ended with provocative discussions of where they want their institutions to go, what prevents them from arriving there in the present, and how they will take steps to get there in the near future.
